Complete dishwasher cleaning in 7 steps

At first it may seem that dishwashers do not need special care, as they look clean for a long time. But in fact, with every wash cycle, the working parts are inevitably contaminated with hard water deposits, food residues and detergents. Limescale and grease deposits gradually lead to breakdowns or ineffective work. Therefore, cleaning the dishwasher (hereinafter PMM) is the main condition for its long-term operation..

Let’s find out how to clean your dishwasher in just 7 easy steps at home. But keep in mind that this is an example of a complete set of procedures, which, of course, does not always need to be performed in full. In addition, some procedures must be performed regularly, and some only as a problem arises..

Step 1. Washing the strainer

Let’s start by cleaning the strainer, which must be cleaned once a week. After all, a bloom of fat forms on it quite quickly, which clogs small cells, which causes an unpleasant odor, and most importantly – to leak.

Cleaning the strainer

To remove the filter, the lower basket is carefully removed and disassembled, as shown in the photo above. Once the filter is removed, it is enough to rinse it under running water with ordinary dishwashing liquid and reinstall it..

Step 2. Cleaning the blades

Now we will clean the blades (impeller or rocker arms), which are also cleaned as they become dirty. They can become clogged with food debris or scale. If this happens, then all the blades must be removed and washed one by one, and the holes must be cleaned with a toothpick as shown in the following photo.

Cleaning the dishwasher rocker arms

After assembly, they should rotate well, if this does not happen, then the axle should also be descaled..

Step 3. We clean the seals

The door seal should be cleaned every 6 months. For this purpose, a specialized product recommended by the dishwasher manufacturer is purchased..

Cleaning the dishwasher seals

  • The space between the pads is easy to brush with a toothbrush.
  • It is better not to use folk remedies like citric acid, as because of it the rubber pad loses its elasticity, which means that the PMM may start to leak..

Step 4. We wash the “dead zone” and baskets

At the bottom of the car door there is a “dead zone” – water does not flow here, but debris accumulates. This part must be remembered to be thoroughly cleaned..

The plastic parts of the basket can be easily and quickly cleaned with a brush and dishwashing detergent.

Step 5. Get rid of grease, mold and rust

Now you need to remove all visible dirt, mold, grease and rust:

  • To remove mold, you will need to apply bleach. However, this process will turn out to be dangerous for stainless steel parts, so it is better to prevent the growth of mold fungi by regularly drying the machine. To do this, simply leave the door open to ventilate the inner compartment;

  • Removing rust. A specific rust remover should be used, but it is also important to understand why corrosion occurs. So, over time, the paint on the baskets can begin to peel off, then you can renew the coating with a special sealant. And so that water with a significant iron content does not enter the device (from rusty pipes, for example), a filter should be installed at the inlet;
  • Ideally, the chamber, door, gaskets and PMM coarse filter should be wiped every day..

Step 6. We clean the machine from scale

For descaling, it is best to purchase a special detergent and run one short wash cycle with it, or, conversely, the most powerful and longest cycle at maximum temperature – it depends on the selected cleaner. Of course, the car must be empty..

  • Which dishwasher cleaner to choose? The most common remedy is Finish cleaner. But there are other effective liquids, such as from HG, Soda sun, Somat, Topper and Amway..
  • It is not recommended to use citric acid, as it can damage the gaskets. As a last resort, you can clean the dishwasher with soda and vinegar: pour 5% table vinegar into an ordinary mug (if diluted from 70% essence, then you need to add 13 tablespoons of water to 1 tablespoon of essence), then add there ¼ cup of baking soda and place the glass on the top rack (for mugs). And then start the machine in the usual program without dishes..

Cleaning the dishwasher from scale and grease

  • It is enough to carry out such cleaning once every 3 months..
  • The most important advice is that for the prevention of scale, do not neglect the regular use of salt, as it changes the composition of the water and does not allow the accumulation of deposits..

Step 7. Wipe the car clean

After the end of the cycle, just wipe the dishwasher chamber – if any dirt remains, they should easily come off.
