Latest Lessons - Human Rights Correspondence School

(The Human Rights Correspondence School of the Asian Human Rights Commission [AHRC] can be found on the internet at www.hrschool.org.)

Lesson Series 40: Rule of Law and Human Rights Implementation

For many years, the AHRC has advocated respect for the rule of law as a major theme of its work; for without this adherence to the law, there is little hope for the promotion and protection of human rights in Asia. This lesson, the first in a four-part series, thus focuses on this important aspect of human rights work by providing an overview of the collapse of the rule of law in the region and explaining its implications for human rights. The lesson also discusses a variety of political, legal, social and cultural factors that influence the rule of law in a society.

Lesson Series 41: Rule of Law: The Role of the Police in Human Rights Implementation

Various aspects of police work as practiced in many countries in Asia - procedures of arrest and detention, registering complaints and investigations - and their impediments to human rights are examined in this lesson. The role of impunity that transforms law enforcement officers into human rights abusers is also investigated. Finally, the systemic flaws in the justice system in many Asian countries that permit police abuse and impunity to thrive is presented.
