HUMAN RIGHTS CORRESPONDENCE SCHOOL: Latest Lessons

Lesson Series 12:
Women's Human Right to Education

A message that is woven into various U.N. conventions is that people have a right to develop themselves. Education is naturally a prevalent path to realise this human right. Throughout much of Asia though, girls are often denied this right. This lesson will describe the ways in which this right is negated for many girls in Asia and will offer a greater understanding of gender role stereotyping. The part that can be played by governments, community leaders, the media and women themselves to promote the access of girls to education and strategies to address this issue is presented in this lesson as well.

Lesson No. 13 and 14: The Use of Communications for the Protection of People and the Promotion of Rights

Historically, communicating orally is the tradition prevalent in Asia. However, with the advent of fax machines, the Internet and e-mail, it is now much easier to share the monitoring of human rights violations at the local or national level with a worldwide audience and to influence the attitudes and reactions of distant recipients of this news. In short, it is now easier to build a global human rights solidarity network to promote and protect human rights. These two lessons offer an introduction to ways to use these modern communication tools to enhance human rights in Asia and why this is important in building a human rights movement.

Lesson No. 15: Trafficking in Persons

Trafficking in persons is a many-faceted phenomenon that is explored in this lesson, the first of two lessons that will be devoted to this topic. The lesson describes the causes and consequences of trafficking within a human rights framework and offers actions that can be taken to address the problem. These actions include measures to defend and promote the basic economic and civil rights of women, men and children as well as efforts to reform and improve the government and legal institutions and systems which should protect and guarantee access to and the enjoyment of these rights without any form of discrimination.
