CAMBODIA: STOP PRESS: Crackdown on Protests

Cambodian police have used armed force to disperse crowds of anti-government demonstrators who called for a thorough investigation into the results of July’s election.

According to Cambodian Human Rights and Development Association (ADHOC), the Cambodian government dead squad - Flying Tiger - has increased using armed violence against the demonstrators since 7 September. The demonstrators including monks, students and ordinary people were protesting in front of the National Assembly and the Ministry of Information.

The authorities applied violence of shooting, killing, beating, threatening and torturing on arrested suspects implicated in a grenade attack on the residence of Second Prime Minister Hun Sen earlier in Phnom Penh, ADHOC said.

To date, two demonstrators were killed by the armed forces that stood guard in front of the Cambodian Hotel where opposition leader Sam Rainsy stayed. One of the victims was shot dead while the other, a monk, was beaten to death. Three leaders of the demonstration were arrested, and some of them were injured.

Condemning these acts of violence, ADHOC urges human rights groups and governments of other countries to put pressure on the Cambodian government to stop any kind of violence immediately.

The government authorities started to crack down on the demonstrators in front of the National Assembly and the Ministry of Information after lunch of 8 September. All the demonstrators had scattered.

ADHOC investigators reported that seven people were beaten to unconsciousness by the authorities and about 100 people were injured in the crackdown. The authorities also tried to arrest some journalists. A lot of motorcycles and bicycles of the demonstrators were confiscated.
