BURMA: Burma Campaign

An Asian campaign is being sponsored and launched by the Asian Human Rights Commission in support of the struggle of the people of Burma. The campaign seeks for the unconditional release of all political prisoners and to end investments and aid in the death of the people of Burma. The other organisations that have actively involved in the planning and coordination of the campaign include Asian Center for the Progress of Peoples, Asian Students Association and Burma Rights Movement for Action.

Aims

  1. To campaign for the unconditional release of all political prisoners in Burma;
  2. To make Asian people aware about human rights violations in Burma;
  3. To call on Asian people to draw the attention of their own governments and business companies to the relation of their aid or investments with the human rights violation in Burma.

Up to July, more than 30 organisations responsed positively to the campaign. They are from Australia, Bangladesh, Hong Kong, India, Pakistan, Japan, Nepal, Aotearoa-New Zealand, Sri Lanka, Thailand….. A resource kit on Burma was made for the campaign and more than one thousand copies have been sent out to groups and individuals in Asia and other countries.

In the coming months, a chain letter campaign and "Burma month-8th August to 18th September" are proposed to mobilse Asian wide joint actions to protest against foreign investment in the death of people of Burma and express support of Asian people to the struggle of the Burmese people.
